How to Join the Peace Corps

The Peace Corps -- have you ever thought of it? It crosses everybody's mind at one point or another, but mostly college students. The Peace Corps offers many benefits, like life experience, student loan repayment, and travel. If you are ready for 27 months of hard but rewarding work, a job with the Peace Corps might be for you. These steps will help you on your way toward an unforgettable experience.

Step 1: Be 18 years old and a U.S. citizen

Meet the basic requirements for joining the Peace Corps by being at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen.

Step 2: Talk to a recruiter or attend a recruiting event

Talk with a Peace Corps recruiter about opportunities and requirements. Check the Peace Corps website for dates of local recruiting events.

Step 3: Complete an application form

Complete the official application form, which is available on the Peace Corps web site or from a recruiting event. Provide information about yourself, your education, and your interests.

Step 4: Interview with a recruiter

Schedule an interview with a recruiter, either in person or over the phone. Prepare to talk about why you want to join as well as your past work and volunteer experience.

Step 5: Complete a medical and legal evaluation

Complete a medical evaluation for full physical, dental, and vision exams. Fill out all the necessary legal paperwork, and pass an FBI background check.

Step 6: Receive your invitation packet and accept your appointment

Receive your official invitation packet in the mail and review your appointment details. Contact your recruiter within 10 days to accept your new job, and get ready to start your new life.
